HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)

HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone naturally produced by placental syncytiotrophoblast cells during pregnancy. It consists of two subunits: an alpha subunit shared with other pituitary glycoproteins (LH, FSH, TSH) and a unique beta subunit that confers biological specificity. HCG acts primarily as a functional analogue of luteinizing hormone (LH), binding to the same LH/HCG receptor with high affinity.

Researchers have studied HCG for its ability to stimulate gonadal steroidogenesis. In males, research has examined how LH/HCG receptor activation in Leydig cells stimulates testosterone biosynthesis and supports spermatogenesis. In females, research has explored its role in triggering ovulation and supporting corpus luteum function. These biological properties have made HCG a valuable tool in reproductive biology research.

Preclinical and clinical research has examined HCG in studies of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis function and regulation. Research has explored its use in models of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism to assess gonadal responsiveness. Studies have also examined HCG as a stimulation test for evaluating Leydig cell reserve and testosterone production capacity in research settings focused on male reproductive endocrinology.
