DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a naturally occurring neuropeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu. First isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood in 1974, it was identified in experiments where its transfer appeared to induce delta wave sleep in recipient animals. DSIP has since been detected in numerous brain regions, peripheral organs, and body fluids in mammals.

Researchers have studied DSIP for its potential role in sleep-wake regulation and stress response modulation. Studies have examined its effects on sleep architecture in animal models, exploring changes in delta (slow-wave) sleep parameters following administration. Research has also investigated DSIP’s potential interactions with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly its possible buffering effects on stress-induced cortisol and ACTH release.

Beyond sleep research, studies have examined DSIP’s antioxidant properties and its potential interactions with opioid receptors. Research has explored its effects on blood pressure regulation, body temperature, and locomotor activity in animal models. Studies have investigated DSIP as a potential modulator of LH and GH secretion, suggesting broader endocrine effects. Its distribution throughout the neuroendocrine system and diverse biological associations have made it a compound of ongoing interest in neuropeptide research.
